Dear Heart,

Listen. I want to tell you that I am very proud of you. You’ve been dragged through the mud and defeated over and over again the past few months. I know that despite my attempts to keep you guarded, you are going to feel things through and through and you will stay warm.

I can’t help but be afraid for you every time you start to feel too much and care for those who may not appreciate you. You are undefeated. Despite everything you are put through, you come out on top, still full of love and appreciation, even for people who can’t appreciate you.

You’re brave. You’re strong and I promise you, despite my protests, I’m proud of the way you don’t give up.

I’d be meaningless without you.

Yours,

The Brain

I wrote this nearly four years ago and found it today when I was clearing out some of the notes from my Facebook profile. I’ve been through so much in the last four years, and funny enough, it’s my own words that give me the unexpected inspiration to push forward when I’ve hit my rock bottom.

What Does It Mean?

The highest love of all finds its fulfillment not in what it keeps, but in what it gives

Love…I hear that word thrown around a lot. It’s become overrated…or is it underrated? I think it’s just misunderstood. We all say that we love certain things but do we even understand what it is we love? A person cannot possibly begin to understand the meaning of love unless they know the pain of loving unconditionally…and I don’t mean just romantic love. That’s another delusion…romantic love is merely a form of love that’s shared between two individuals…sometimes it’s only shared by one of the two. What about everything else?

So…what does it mean to me?

Heartbreak…

Tears…

Sleepless nights…

Breathless moments…

A smile…

A “thank you”…

The last raindrop after a summer storm…

A book…

Music…

Betrayal…

Uncertainty…

Anxiety…

Anticipation…

A phone call just to say “Hi”…

Whispers…

A baby’s laugh…

Life…is love. When you can look past your prejudices, your materialistic values, the popular opinion, the selfish motives, the insecurities…you’ll know that life is love. Being able to breathe is reason enough to love life and be thankful but we take that for granted. We take ourselves for granted…some of us hold ourselves too high and take the rest of the world granted. Some of us don’t even know that true love is so close that we go out looking for it in places it doesn’t exist. We are so afraid that we’ll go our whole life without finding “true” love that we step over the real love that’s around us.

Look in the mirror one day…look yourself in the eyes. What do you see? Who are you? *What* do you love about yourself and why?

Look at the room around you…go outside and look at your house…then walk around your neighborhood. See that tricycle that’s left on your neighbor’s lawn…think of the little baby that rides that…do you remember what it was like back then? To be carefree and to love things around you unconditionally because that was all you knew. You didn’t know hate…but you knew happiness…and pain…because with the good, we have to take the bad…don’t forget…

Love can bring you pain but it’s OK. It reminds you of everything else in your life that doesn’t hurt you…

Love is the child of an endless war
Love is an open wound still raw
Love is a shameless banner unfurled
Love’s an explosion,
Love is the fire of the world
Love is a violent star
A tide of destruction
Love is an angry scar
A violation, a mutilation, capitulation

Love is annihilation.
