I always have trouble with gift-giving because I want to make it personal. I would always give my mom jewelry for her birthday & wedding anniversary but I think the best gift I gave was an unplanned one.

My entire high school career revolved around the fact that I wanted to go to college and in order to go, I would need a scholarship.  My parents came to this country to make sure that my brother and I would have the best opportunities and the least I could do was to make sure I’d make them proud.

I applied to a few colleges but the one I had my heart set on was GWU. Anyone knows that GWU is expensive and there was no way I could go without any kind of aid so I busted my butt in high school with AP classes, extracurricular activities and honor societies (And the nerd that I am, I actually enjoyed it). In winter of 2003, acceptance letters started rolling in, and I got in to GWU yet there was no word of any kind of financial aid.

The day that I was going to put in my deposit for admission to another college that did give me a scholarship, the mailman came early.

With a big envelope from GWU.

On February 7, 2003, my dad’s birthday, I received proof that all of my hard work and my dad’s unwavering faith in me paid off.

I don’t think I could’ve planned a better birthday present for my dad, though the meals I cook for his birthday are pretty amazing.

  1. You’re right – the best presents are personal (and sometimes unplanned). They’re the ones that let the recipient know you’ve been listening.
