“Relax, Baby” He Said, “This Won’t Hurt a Bit”

“RELAX” That’s a word I hear a lot but I don’t exactly know HOW to do it. My brain never stops and there’s never a moment of peace in my hectic life so to relax is a far-fetched idea for me.

No matter what I do, I’m always on edge because I know that something is always around the corner. As soon as I try to relax…

Especially if I’m at home, on the other side of the door, there is always something bound to blow up.

Despite everything though, I do try to relax. There ARE things that help me relax. First of all…writing. I think this is pretty much a given for anyone that knows me. I’m happy when I’m writing. If I’m angry, I write. If I’m happy, I write. I write to be alive and it helps me relax.

Bubble baths…Once a week or once every couple of weeks, I try to give myself at least a half hour in the tub, despite everything that might be going on in my life. I fill up the bubbles and fill in the bath salts. Turn the water up to almost scalding hot and then I let my body just unwind.

Of course, another given is reading. Well, duh.

Anytime I’m feeling REALLY stressed out, I take a drive. This doesn’t count if it’s rush hour traffic filled with idiots. It has to be a time and place when I can drive without worrying about anything, blasting my music and singing at the top of my lungs.

I also like to sit in a Starbucks sometimes and people watch.

Nothing beats listening to music though. I AM that girl that has her headphones on ALL.THE.TIME.

OK, if I leave this out, I’ll have people thinking I’m insane…

If none of these can help me relax…then there is a secret weapon.

    I sing, or read or…. weirdly enough… cry. It’s very cathartic at times.

    I write to relax too…

    And I cook. Super complicated recipes with lots of chopping and mincing and mixing and separating and smashing and slicing… With the music up loud and god help anyone who tries to turn it down or off.

    I too have a restless mind…last night I tossed and turned until 3 am. Why? Lord knows.

    I do find writing to be helpful and cathartic, though at 3 am I have very little to say other than “I’M TIRED I WANT TO SLEEP ARGHHH.”

    And that would make for a very interesting blog post.

    This may sound weird, but I get on the treadmill and walk or run. My other ways to relax are: cooking, reading, watching movies, and or just sitting by a creek or river and meditating.

    Usually just sitting with my guitar helps. But also eating: especially something really simple, like pancakes.

    Mine is definitely reading somewhere quiet. That means I’m pretty much relaxed any time I’m at home since I have my own reading space. I prefer summer though, because my reading space then is my patio in my back yard.

    I write. And sleep. Or, if I am not sleeping, simply laying still relaxes me. In silence.
