Diamond Studded 84 Year Old Adventure

Oh hello. I bet you’re wondering what I’m doing on my bathroom floor. No, I didn’t pass out. What actually happened is this morning, my diamond stud decided to fly off my ear and fall on to the bathroom floor. Naturally, it couldn’t stay put and actually bounced in to a crack on the floor and proceeded to disappear in the wall. So, I was just trying to get it out with these tweezers. You would think that a day that started out like that couldn’t get any more interesting. Oh but you’d be wrong.

See, today was the day my first class started. Oh, I was excited…and nervous. I didn’t realize how nervous until I was back on campus…See, for 3 years, I spent basically all day, every day on campus. Some of the best and worst moments of my life happened as I walked those streets…So naturally, walking around on campus today, memories flooded back. You know what else flooded back? How much I really dislike some of the kids that go to my school but I’ll get to that.

See, I didn’t feel like walking back to work after class so I drove my car on to campus and had to find parking. I parked my car, and decided to visit a friend of mine who works on campus. When I came back to my car a half hour later, I found $100 ticket on the window. Thanks DC Police! Why didn’t you ticket the other 3 cars parked on the street? See…during rush hour, one side of the street can’t be used for parking. Unfortunately, it doesn’t apply to EVERY street…and it’s been 2 years so I forgot.

Regardless, I took a deep breath, parked my car, got my notebook and walked over the library where my class was going to be tonight. See, it’s a 700 level class which requires departmental approval so I figured that it would be around 15 people, all in my field and it would be an interesting class. I walked in, and there were about 5 people…so we all sit down…we’re talking. More people start to come in…and then the TA comes in…he then tells us that the professor is usually 10 minutes late…And as we’re waiting for the professor, more people keep coming in. 15…20..25…We need to bring in more chairs…it’s getting pretty hot in there…The girls across the table and I exchange looks…Nearly 30 people are in the room before the professor gets there. The problem? It’s a seminar so we’re in a room that is only reserved to fit about 18 people. Uh…huh…

Professor walks in. Walks to his chair. He’s funny…I can tell I’m going to like him. We find out he’s 84…has a Chinese wife who happens to be his 4th wife and she’s brilliant. We find out this information…Oh 4 times over the course of the 2 hours. Naturally, at 84 years old, you tend to repeat things. You also go on tangents. You also ask the same people the same questions at least twice and then say “Did we already go over this? How do you spell your name again? I’m 84 years old”…

I feel for his TA…He was trying to keep the professor on track. The professor is funny though…and I think once he can focus, we’ll get good discussions going. Here is the tiny problem. We were about 12 people over the quota for the class. It’s a seminar. You don’t have a 30 person seminar.

Here is what pissed me off. Half the people in that class were SOPHOMORES. A few of them weren’t even in the international affairs school. The thing about this class is that it is a major requirement. It requires departmental approval because it’s a seminar and they only want seniors to take it. So if we waited two years for it, what makes you think your snobby, no good, sophomore ass deserves to be in that class? Because let me tell you something. It does not. Sophomores are not entitled to be in 700 level seminars. Sophomores are not entitled to any class they want just because their daddy gave them everything they wanted to keep them from whining. Sophomores don’t belong with seniors. Especially when there is a limited number of classes that are offered to fulfill requirements. Sophomores.wait.their.turn.

I go to the second most expensive school in the country. I go there because I earned a scholarship. I worked hard to come as far as I did. I did not pay my way through admissions. I also know something about waiting my turn and knowing that some things…you have to earn. You are not entitled to them. I’ve earned my way through to get to this class. I’ve earned my right into this seminar. I will be DAMNED if a sophomore takes my seat.

Oh. The fun part about this class? There’s a paper due. Every. Week. And it’s two hours long. 😯

But you know what? I am SO ready for it.

Oh and no. No hot guys in my class.

I have a feeling it’s going to be an interesting semester. Welcome to the chronicles of the Princess @ school…

What kind of student were you in school? Did you ever have a quirky teacher/professor? Is there a place that brings back a LOT of memories if you go to/by it? What kind of stories do you want from me as the semester continues?

wow, that sounds fantastic. I’m guessing the # of sophomores will dwindle as time goes on.

I would be kinda jazzed about a paper due every week… But I’m a nerd like that.

And in my head, your professor has a pimp cane and feathered hat and it makes me smile. πŸ˜†

School was waaaaay to long ago for me to remember any of my teachers, and I never went to college.

I’m sorry that you got a ticket though.

Look at the bright side, no hot guys in your class = less distractions from your studies.
